«Cura deum di sunt, et qui coluere coluntur.»
“He who cared for the gods is dear to the gods, and he who honored is honored.”
Ovid, Metamorphoses, VIII, 724
Ovid recounts that Jupiter and Mercury descended to earth one day as travelers. They knocked on a thousand doors and found them all closed. Only a humble hut welcomed them: that of Philemon and Baucis, an elderly spouse who offered the unknown guests the little they had, with a generosity that asked nothing in return. When the gods revealed themselves, they asked them what gift they desired. The spouses asked only that they guard the temple and not outlive each other. Having reached the end of their days together, they were transformed into two neighboring trees, he into an oak and she into a linden, whose branches still intertwine today.
Hospitality, love, and centuries-old trees: this is the spirit of our home.
